Amateur astronomers are among the most dedicated scientific contributors in any field. Variable star observers, occultation timers, comet hunters, exoplanet transit monitors — the data they collect genuinely advances professional research.
The existing platforms that serve this community — AAVSO, the British Astronomical Association, the Astronomical Society of the Pacific — were built for English-speaking audiences in North America and the UK. An observer in São Paulo, Nairobi, or Bangalore gets the same interface, the same sky, and the same indifference to their hemisphere.
StarScope Global is built differently. The platform is hemisphere-aware from the ground up: tonight's sky panels, DSO recommendations, meteor shower calendars, and aurora alerts all adapt to where you are. Southern hemisphere observers get Magellanic Cloud events, Omega Centauri transits, and Eta Carinae alerts — not a Northern hemisphere feed with a flag toggle.
The feeds are public data, aggregated and presented clearly. The community is open to everyone. The Pro tier funds the infrastructure. No advertising, no data brokering, no dark patterns.
We're not a replacement for AAVSO's variable star database, the BAA's observing sections, or any of the specialist organisations that do serious scientific work. Those organisations matter and we link to them where relevant.
We're an aggregation and community layer — a better front door to the data that already exists, and a place for observers worldwide to talk to each other without the friction of forum software from 2003.
StarScope Global is a platform for serious amateur astronomers. The community is open to all observers, free of charge. By participating, you agree to the following:
Astronomy focus. Keep discussion relevant to astronomy, astrophysics, space science, equipment, and observation. Off-topic commercial content, spam, and unrelated links will be removed.
Respectful conduct. No harassment, hate speech, personal attacks, or discriminatory language. Disagreement about science is welcome; personal attacks are not.
No spam or self-promotion. Do not post affiliate links, referral codes, or unsolicited commercial content. Sharing your own observations, images, or tools is welcome.
Moderation. Messages are reviewed by an automated moderation system. Flagged content is stored and reviewed by the platform team. Users who repeatedly violate these guidelines may be suspended.
